About a week ago (2008-04-25?) I upgrade my Dell Latititude CPi D300XT from
Xubuntu 7.10 to 8.04. However, after restart[*], the system fails to boot
properly. One of the relevant error messages I see says that the root file
system is mounted as read-only... At this point, I don't even get a bash
prompt, but if I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, the boot process continues a bit and I can
login through a text console. However, the file system is read only, but I can
deal with that problem and boot the system by doing:
sudo mount -o remount,rw /
sudo telinit 1
and then letting it resume a normal boot.
After the continued normal boot, X also starts, but after the running
the system for a while it starts accessing the hard disk constantly,
making the system unusable.
Regarding the restart:
[*] It was in the middle of the night, so I did a power-off during the reboot
and then powered-on the next day.
I don't know if this could make a difference. However, I tried some
other stuff:
* Booting to single mode => same result, halted boot process and a read-only
file system
* While trouble shooting the disk activity, I chose a different kernel:
2.6.22-14,
rather than the most recent kernel => this works!
So the status is that the system seems to work fine I use 2.6.22-14 and
I'm ok with this.
However, if some of the developers would like to investigate this I'll
be happy to post the any log files or perform needed tests. (I'll have
to reboot to check what kernel version it was that failed, but I can do
that of course).
