I am experiencing the same problem. However, I seem to be able to repeat
this the most with playing audio and/or video in X. Playing audio in the
console doesn't do it (that I can tell), but using Flash video, or
closing FireFox after watching Flash video, and then using just about
anything else that uses an overlay (including OpenGL) or audio may lock
it up. In general, audio-only lock ups take a longer time to happen. I
am interested in any ideas around this possibly being an I/O issue? I
have not been able to see anything from dmesg. Follow the steps above,
and it pauses for a full second or so, the screen goes black... and have
to power off and back on. Or something, on this motherboard, seems like
I have to hold the power button in, and then upon release, it restarts.

My hardware:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+
MSI K9AGM2-FIH
On-board ATI X1250
Atheros AR5007 wireless
20GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA
Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro USB (C-Media)
