Yes, I have just tried that, and discovered that: The new user trash icon behaves in exactly the same buggy way, that is, it doesn't update with adding stuff to an empty trashcan nor emptying it, although opening it does show the items in there.
Stranger, when I logged back out and back into my old account, the trashcan icon had completely disappeared! However, it is still "there", it just isn't visible, since right-clicking on it does open up a trashcan context menu. Sometimes, display things are compiz related. I tried turning off and on compiz but that doesn't change anything.
