Binary package hint: update-manager-core

I typed: "sudo do-release-upgrade -d" and got a number of Warnings and
Fails.

Towards the end of the installation of a list of packages I got the following:
.....
"Calculating the changes
Could not calculate the upgrade
A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade."
.....

Fore more info II am attaching the .var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log file, which 
ends with the following text:
........
2008-05-07 14:40:09,092 DEBUG Kernel uname: '2.6.15-51-server' 
2008-05-07 14:40:09,390 DEBUG The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for 
removal but it's in the removal blacklist
2008-05-07 14:40:09,400 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'An essential package would 
have to be removed'

         Status: New
