I'm seeing similar behavior. I see no icon at all in the Gnome menu, but
oddly I do see the correct icon if I open the Menu Editor. The file
/usr/share/applications/liferea.desktop defines "Icon=liferea" and the
package includes /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/liferea.png.
