I am experiencing this problem as well.  If I boot the 2.6.22 kernel I get some 
repeating messages:
ata1: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 Scontrol 300)
ata1.00: qctimeout (cmd 0xec)
ata1.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error err_mask=0x4)
...

I have to use the older 2.6.20 kernel to boot into the system right now.
