I get that distorted boot screen if I enter anything into xorg.conf beyond the stub version above. The way I fixed a similar problem was by deleting monitors.xml and regenerating xorg.conf with sudo dpkg- reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg leaving it an empty stub.
