I had a similar problem after installing 8.04 LTS both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions on a Dell PowerEdge 830. After logging in, the screen went to the typical Ubuntu light brown screen, however the mouse did work. The FAILSAFE Gnome login did the same thing.
