The package I installed was:
nvidia-glx-new_169.12+2.6.24.12-16.34_amd64.deb
here is the output of dpkg -l "linux*2.6.24*" | grep ^ii
ii linux-headers-2.6.24-16 2.6.24-16.30
Header files related to Linux kernel version
ii linux-headers-2.6.24-16-generic 2.6.24-16.30
Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.24 on x
ii linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic 2.6.24-16.30
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86
ii linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-generic 2.6.24-16.23
Ubuntu supplied Linux modules for version 2.
I want to point out that when I remove the nvidia-glx-new package and
run nvidia's proprietary installation it works with that xorg.conf file.
I know it goes through a step where it builds the kernel module. If you
want me to upload the kernel modules it built to check them out against
the ones in the package I can.
