Public bug reported:

Update manager creates fauilty menu.lst on upgrade Feisty to Gutsy. (May 8,
2008)
After fix (change root line in menu.lst), upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy (same
date) gives non-booting system, but recovery mode allows fix of X.
However, afterwards, synaptic will not load from System/Administration. (Get
the clock, then back to arrow cursor). From a terminal, 'gksudo synaptic' does
work.

Seems like some of the scripts may have minor but annoying bugs.
