Public bug reported:
Hardy, up to date, gdm, fresh install.
After logging out, switching users, or shutting down the machine locks
up, and is unresponsive to input. Hard power-off (hold power key) is
required. On reboot, fsck checks filesystem,
Lockup occurs after X has closed, black screen is showing.
This is an intermittent fault, it occurs about a third of the time.
Going to nosplash reduced initial frequency but did not eliminate fault.
Hardware is a Dell Latitude D800, Pentium M processor, Intel 855 (I
think) graphics. My guess would be that this is an issue with the
graphics driver caused by the migration to EXA from XAA for compiz
acceleration. I have disabled desktop effects for all user profiles and
will comment again in a few days to report as to whether this makes a
noticeable difference.
