I have some follows up on this bug report. I have fixed the problem with the fglrx driver that comes with hardy: it was my fault I forgot to unblacklist the kernel module after trying to install the latest version from ATI. Yet the fglrx (catalyst 8.4) kernel module from ATI still does not link because of the GPL symbol issue. I am using a RT kernel, could there be a difference in the GPL-ness of some symbol wrt the normal kernel? Online documentations such as http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide report successful installations.
