If you are at the 15% error, the problem is the way HP/Compaq handle interrupts.
When you start the install, use the HELP screen F1 and the ?F6, activate no 
apic no lapic. this will turn off the HP interrupt processor.
If you are at won't let you do the sudo, this is a scripting error. I have 
looked but cannot find. I installed UBUNTU 8.04 stable. Then, used the install 
disk to do the rescue, I think it is F4. I mounted the target system. Then, 
renamed GDM to GDMM. GDM brings up the gnome system. Now when it boots up, it 
enters the text mode. I can login in as root, do what I want and then start the 
gui with startx
