Public bug reported:

I have just completed a fresh install of Hardy 8.04. The same problem was
occurring after I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy, and I was hoping a fresh
install would repair the problem but it appears not.
I cannot use Ubuntu for longer than about 20 minutes before everything starts
locking up. The mouse slows down and no new programs will open. Existing
programs may work for a while but then crash.

At this point I hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and I end up in a non-graphical
session. Sometimes I am prompted for a username, other times the screen
is empty or filled with error messages. I can type, and my letters
appear on the screen, but I cannot login or do anything. If I hit Ctrl-
Alt-Delete, the computer does not restart. I have to hard reset the
computer.

Whilst in the non-graphical session, I get a series of error messages. I
don't know how to copy and paste these, so I've written down a few on
paper. In no particular order, the error messages include things like:

EXT3-fs error (device sda1): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted
journal<6>sd 1:0:0:0 [sda] Result: hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET
