@Conn: From the limited testing I have done it seems that installing the updated libasound2 packages fixes _both_ the stutter and the Rhythmbox hangs when playing over the network. I can run 2 instances of yes > /dev/null while playing on a remote server and there is completely no stutter even when switching desktops. Thank you very much for solving my problem! BTW, I think the libasound2 packages should be provided at least as a backport in the Ubuntu repos.
