I think I have the same problem.

Some alpha-versions worked, then there was an update and after that, x started
crashing a few seconds after login. Sometimes, the logon-sound stuck in a loop.
This happened using the live-cd, too.

The "stable" version worked fine, but many weeks ago, there was an update and
since then, it crashes again.
I use a xorg.conf-file which I copied from another ubuntu-system. I tried "ati"
and "fglrx".

When the system crashes, it sometimes seems to have high cpu load (fan spins
up), but this is not always the case.
I can't switch to a console or terminate x. The system is unreachable (network).
Sometimes the screen turns dark (only backlight remains).
Sometimes the picture is corrupted (strange lines or colored fields, white
screen...)
Sometimes the lcd-panel is switched off while the backlight stays on (picture
slowly turns into white).
Sometimes I still can move the mouse cursor.

I could not find any error-logs until now.

I disabled desktop-effects and the system worked. But when executing glxinfo,
it crashed again. Same happend with glxgears.
I tried the suggested Options in xorg.conf.

The affected machine is: Acer travelmate 4001lmi with mobility radeon
9700/64MB.
