Seems like unfortunately this is Murphy's law in excess. We have a lot that can 
go wrong and it does. :-/ It seems quite a few (as far as I now understand the 
logs) might have problems with the active multiplexing (though it still 
requires a bit of reading to understand).
Generally, whenever you post message logs here, put in the ones with 
i8042.debug=1. This is the only way to see what the controller is doing (which 
should be the place the touchpad is connected normally). And we probably have 
to treat USB touchpads differently. There also seem to be some which have the 
touchpad detected but "only" not as touchpad but as a ps/2 mouse.
