I am using a VIA unicrome Pro , 64mb of graphic memory. I am updating,

Why do you try to turn the desktop effects on when you know that they
will not work? Oo
Anyway, what graphics card do you have? What driver are you using? What
version of KDE 4 did you try?
Btw, just for information, I rather think this is an issue of the
graphic driver, KWin is running a couple of tests before actually
initializing the effects usage. It does however save the effect setting
before testing, which leads to that login problem - defenitely needs to
be fixed in my opinion.
