I would like to give an update about the state of my network-manager. On 2008-04-27 I had written "Currently network manager is able to sustain an ethernet connection but does not give me an option to connect to enable wireless." Later that day I was able to get my wireless to work.
I apologize that I cannot recall exactly what happened -- either I ran something in System/Administration OR Hardy automatically recognized the wireless card after a reboot, but in any case, a window appeared directing me to the proprietary wireless driver and asked if I wanted to use it (which I did). After following the directions in the window, the wireless worked just fine. So, I do now have wireless. OTOH, I did indeed receive the error listed above during the upgrade process and it might be relevant for other users or to improve the installation script.
