I can confirm that tonioLeRital's fix worked for me. Upon reading aqua's
comment, I also installed xserver-xgl ("sudo apt-get install xserver-
xgl"). This seemed to improve the performance of compiz and everything
seems to work smoother. Thanks guys. :)
