The behavior started after installing VMWare Server 2.0 beta. However,
yesterday I ran update manager and rebooted (required for SSH bug), and it
appears one of those updates fixed the issue. I had rebooted in the past and
I had the same problem.

So I guess this bug can be closed. I haven't seen the behavior again since
before patching.
