Public bug reported:

I have

- Ubuntu 8.04 desktop amd64
- Intel Core 2 Quad (64-bit, 4 cores)
- default installation, with default repositories
- most recent updates via apt-get as of 2008-05-15

I also have ia32-libs installed, and what is bundled with it (ia32-libs-
gtk at least).

The problem: when I try to open the file selection dialog from any GTK
application, the application in question hangs completely. No dialog is
popped up, and the window stops refreshing. In particular, this happens
in Firefox 3 beta 5, VMWare Workstation 6.0, and Thunderbird 2.0.0.14.

This seems like a deadlock or a race condition of some sort, as top
reports no CPU utilization for the locked program.

Before installing ia32-libs, all GTK applications worked without
problems. After installing them, applications continued to function. A
day or two later this bug appeared. Unfortunately I am not sure what has
changed; one candidate is library paths (perhaps the 32-bit version of
GTK is interfering with the 64-bit one, or vice versa?). Removing
ia32-libs does not resolve the issue. For some reason, there are still
some 32-bit libraries installed (/lib32, /usr/lib32).

ia32-libs are mandatory for running VMWare Workstation 6.0.
