I had exactly the same issue with my laptop, a Gigabyte W251U, after
installing Hardy (also with Fedora 9 btw).

After a lot of research in forums, I ultimately got it right by adding
(to alsa-base):

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-micsense

Now the sound works fine, either through the headphones or through the
speakers!
