I was having a similar problem with an IDE CD burner, it wouldn't erase a CD-RW from k3b or wodim on the command line. However, when I connected up an external USB burner it worked fine. Don't know if this helps shed any light on the problem. Relevant sections from lshw are below, I can provide more info if it's wanted.
