I have the same problem. Any changes to bookmarks aren't saved between browser sessions. However, I have made bookmarks on this machine before. This problem is recent. Was there a firefox update recently which might have added this problem?
I incrementally removed all firefox extensions, including the ubuntu ones, restarting each time.
