Hi! I believe that most of these problems (n-m + dial-up => offline) are tightly related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /network-manager/+bug/147119. The network-manager just fails to detect wheather a modem connected successfully or not. Please fix the bug #147119 - the fix is really trivial and patches were provided almost two months ago. It will surely help a lot of users...
