Binary package hint: gcc-4.2
If I try to install gcc-4.2 version 4.2.3-4ubuntu1, then this breaks
libffi4, which depends on an EXACT gcc-4.2 version.
If I try to remove libffi4, then this breaks twelve other packages,
including rhythmbox, totem-gstreamer, and about 10 python packages that
interact with gnome (python-gobject, deskbar-applet, python-launchpad-
integration, python-notify, etc.)
I would rather not remove all these packages, since that results in
removing system-config-printer-gnome.
Since the gcc-4.2 changelog doesn't explicitly mention removing libffi4, the
obvious answer would be that this is a bug in gcc-4.2
However, it could be that Debian (and therefore Ubuntu?) intend to remove
libffi4, and make other packages stop depending on it, in which case it would
be a bug in the other packages.
Hopefully this can be fixed or resolved soon somehow - apt can't even
figure out how to resolve the crazy dependency conflicts in current
intrepid! I have to do it manually! On the other hand, Debian unstable
works fine and has no such conflicts at the moment.
