To disable usplash you can follow the steps below:
sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Remove the "splash" option from the appropriate lines. I.e., Replace:
kernel /boot/... root=... ro quiet splash
With:
kernel /boot/... root=... ro quiet
Regarding the install process failure can you attach the file
/var/log/apt/term.log
