Having followed the "Howto Debug Display Issues", the problem is
resolved on my system.

What I think happened is that my monitor/video card settings weren't
quite right. My original installation was Ubuntu 7.10 and I had a lot of
trouble setting up the video (it took me 3 or 4 reboots and there were
instances of settings disappearing or reverting to values other than
what I thought I had set). I finally got it to work at 800x600 and left
it there even though I prefer 1024x768.

Whatever those settings were, they 'worked' until I upgraded to Ubuntu
8.04. I'm new to Linux so I may be mis-interpreting the commands I typed
in, but I think the - sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg - erased those
settings because when I rebooted, I had to go through the same video
settings procedure that had been so troublesome the first time. Maybe
because I'm a little more experienced, it was a little easier this time
(but still harder than I'd like) and I even managed to set it to
1024x768.

I've attached a file with the outputs requested although I limited the
xorg.conf.* files to a sample (I think xorg.conf.3 was the original
setup and .5 was when I got it working).
