Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

Using linux-image 2.6.24-16 (and accompanying restricted-modules), the
old nvidia module is always loaded, instead of the new 169.12 module.
The only way I found to force the new one to load was to manually move
the old module out of place (from
/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/volatile/nvidia.ko to wherever) and
symlinking the nvidia_new.ko to nvidia.ko. No amount of fiddling in
config files and such would make it load the new module for me; even
'modprobe -v nvidia_new' still loaded the old module. I don't have
nvidia-glx installed, or nvidia-glx-legacy, only nvidia-glx-new. I don't
have this problem with linux-image-2.6.24-14. Of course, until fixed,
this stops X from starting due to an API mismatch. I'm running on amd64
and have a Geforce 8600 GT.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
