Ok, lets look at Google Earth as the example. When launched, it's supposed to connect to the google servers and show you a globe. This is what happens when I run it through the terminal, but if I try to run it through the menu or the ALT+F2 run dialog, it doesn't seem to connect, and most elements are greyed out (see attached screenshot)
