Patching security-critical infrastructure in distros should absolutely
be no problem at all! </dark sarcasm>

No, of course I'll discuss this upstream first. I tend to agree that
showing stars isn't too bad, although much worse than Blattlaus
argued: the stars remain on screen even after you typed it
(scrollback), etc. But if it wouldn't be stars, but rather something
like a random throbber, this would provide key press feedback without
giving away information about the length.
