I would try renaming the xorg.conf file to something else (as you
suggested) and let the system detect the card and monitor again.
xorg.conf isn't a required file (usually it's quite empty) as of hardy
so letting the system auto-configure the card might remedy the
situation.  Could you please report back what you find?  By the way,  is
the main goal to use the restricted driver or the nv driver?
