Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: synaptic
I have been having a problem in Ubuntu 7.10,
I have not had this problem any of the other 11 times I re-install Ubuntu 7.10
version 386 from the same CD before.
First I wanted to know when to update, because one package called
language-pack-gnome-en will not work right.
and tried fixing this problem by myself, but now ADD/REMOVE doesn't work, as
well as Synaptic Package Manager.
I try updating and get this message:
Software index is broken:
It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package
manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this
issue at first.

I also tried going into synaptic package manager and going to Edit/Fix Broken
Packages, but it doesn't work, and it gives me this message:
An error occured
The following details are provided:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/language-pack-gnome-en-
base_1%3a7.10+20080205_all.deb: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted
package archive
Iused to get that message when I opened Update Manager.
I already tried going into the terminal and using these commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install build-essential
but nothing I know of has fixed these problems however I am a newbee to Linux,
and have only known Linux even existed for a little more then a year.
