Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 german version, all fixes applied.
I face in about 90% of trials to install another software package the fact that
the process stops. From those lucky moments where I succeeded I conclude it is
just the moment befor the administrative PW is requested.

Internetconnection is up, mail, browser, lan-connectivity works fine.
Since I have the german version installed I cannot name the corresponding
english expressions. Sorry for that, maybe someone can translate.
1.
a) Menu "Anwendungen" (applications?) > Hinzufügen/Entfernen (add/remove?)
b) selecting the package (e. g. audacity, thunderbird, one after another)
c) answering the question "apply changes" opens another window only with the
selected application
d) answering again the question in this window: "apply". From this moment all
buttons get deactivated, the clock-symbol rotating, and even after 2 hours
waiting nothing went on. I have to restart Ubuntu because I have no idea of how
to get rid auf this window.

2. (till now never succeedet for none of my multimedia files)
a) Opening a wmv-file. Totem opens
b) Totem starts searching for codecs and proposes Gstreamer ffmpeg-plugin
c) window "multimedia-codecs installieren" I confirm the information msg that
there might be a restricted use in some countries
d) the process of downloading and installation should start, but same happens
as 1.d

Sorry for reporting a bug that cannot be reproduced in 100% of cases.

Gruß, Gerhard
