I retried twice and consistently get the following on the log window (by
pressing CTRL+ALT+F4) :

kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 141278
in-target: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.04 _Hardy Heron_ - Release i386

in-target: E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try

main-menu[3340]: WARNING **: Configuring 'pkgsel' failed with error code 1
main-menu[3340]: WARNING **: Menu item 'pkgsel' failed.

An I/O error seems to incriminate the CD, but the strange thing is that
the CD is OK (I checked with the Ubuntu utility, by selecting "check CD
for defects" just after boot).
