While this bug is still going on, I'll add something else:

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy), with Medibuntu for media playing, on an
Intel 945G video system.

Xine plays H.264-MKS ok, but the colours are a too bright and a little
too saturated.  It's watchable (a big improvement over 6 months ago),
but looks wrong.

VLC plays the same videos much better.  They look about right.

This is with no particular adjustments on my part.

Isn't that interesting?
