Public bug reported:
What has been done?
1) Ubuntu x64 8.04 (desktop version from live CD) has been installed with
almost default settings to 20Gb JFS partition.
No network was available during install.
2) Network has been configured (System->Administration->Network has been
launched). There was a bunch of dumb issues during this process.
- Actually, window list with network adapters is too small. So name of
interface (eth0 or eth1 or whatever) is not fully visible.
* This leads to mistakes when machine has more than one adapter.
- When static IP is configured rather than roaming mode, interface should go
down and then up with new settings.
* In practice however some nasty remainders of roaming mode settings are
interferred with proper applying static IP settings to choosen network
adapter.Actually this happened more than once (seen same issue while using Live
CD itself, even more hard issue - sometimes I'm unable to get network working
through these GUI settings at all and try reboot to fix this is impossible for
LiveCD so user may have to resort to not using network while booting from Live
CD).
Actually on installed system settings were properly applied when network
settings were changed again with introducing small differences to cause
interface reload. Then networking has began to operate properly, after
all.
