Public bug reported:

I am trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop for i386, built on
20061017.2, on a Dell Dimension 5150. This machine worked with 6.10 Knot
3 and passed all tests. Also, the CD was checked for defects and none
were found.

When installing with the default options and choosing to overwrite the
disk (no resizing), the process crashes with an error window containing:

File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 166, in ?
  main()
File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 161, in main
  install(sys.argv[1])
File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 57, in install
  ret = wizard.run()
File "/usr/lib/ubiquity/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 305, in run
  self.progress_loop()
File "/usr/lib/ubiquity/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 856, in process_step
  self.progress_loop()
File "/usr/lib/ubiquity/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 631, in progress_loop
 ...

The rest is truncated because the window is too long for the 800x600
resolution detected during the installation process. Since the system
was still operational, I have attached the kern.log and dmesg log files.
