I have also tried to reinstall the drivers, but to no avail

(1) tried it with envNG
This is what I did:
- Boot up computer, choosing kernel 2.6.24-17 in Grub boot menu
- When in the log in screen, typed in username and password which brings me to
the white screen.
- hit ctrl-alt-f2, and logged in in tty2
- ran "sudo envyng -t"
- chose option 3 "install ATI driver"
- reboot, choosing kernel 2.6.24-17 in Grub boot menu
---> Same result, white screen
- reboot, choosing kernel 2.6.24-16 in Grub boot menu
---> seems to be working fine

(2) tried it with "System-->Administration-->Hardware Drivers"
- Boot up computer, choosing kernel 2.6.24-16 in Grub boot menu
- I can log in fine, no problems
- Unchecked the ATI driver in "System-->Administration-->Hardware Drivers"
- Reboot computer, choosing kernel 2.6.24-17 in Grub boot menu
- I now wanted to check the "ATI driver" again in
"System-->Administration-->Hardware Drivers", but there is none to check
- tried ctrl-alt-f2, log in in tty2, ran sudo envyNG -t
- reboot, choosing kernel 2.6.24-17 in Grub boot menu
---> White screen
- reboot, choosing kernel 2.6.24-16 in Grub boot menu
---> also White screen with this kernel now
- ctrl-alt-f2, log in tty2, edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf, changed "Driver fglrx"
to "Driver ati"
- reboot, choosing kernel 2.6.24-17 in Grub boot menu
- I can log in fine, but there is no "ATI driver" in
"System-->Administration-->Hardware Drivers" for me to place a check mark in
front of
- reboot, choosing kernel 2.6.24-16 in Grub boot menu
- the "ATI driver" in "System-->Administration-->Hardware Drivers" is back
again, I checked it then rebooted
- Working fine
