Public bug reported:
Whenever I attempt to install or remove software from Synaptic, Update
Manager, or gdebi-gtk my system slows to a halt. Everything becomes so
slow that the system practically locks up and makes it impossible for me
to do anything else, even move the mouse normally. For some reason,
though using apt-get or gdebi from terminal works perfectly well, and
does not slow down the rest of the system in any way.
