I can confirm this bug on a Toshiba Tecra A8-ez8313 running Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron with kernel 2.6.24-17-386.
I have to use the headphone port to hear any audio output. I can control it with the external volume toggle or the Volume control from the Panel.
