And if you do a ctrl-c exit then immediately issue another gksu id does it then work? That's what happened in my case. I've also found that sometimes 'gksu id' works, other times not. I'm still waiting for a response back from Michael; I have not updated the laptop since my last comments & I'm quite willing to provide/test whatever is necessary on that machine to assist.
