I've noticed this problem with every release. Let me quantify that by
saying, when I install the NVIDIA drivers manually (I'm not using
packaged drivers) and I logout of my system, KDM fails, and I get black
screen. CRTL+ALT+BACKSPACE does not restart X, instead I have to swtch
to a terminal login, and restart KDM that way. I've only noticed this
problem with manually installed NVIDIA drivers, and I've experienced
this on Dapper, Fesity, and Hardy. I'm using the NVIDIA 96.43 version
drivers- and I have two versions of Kubuntu running. I am running i386
with Feisty, and x86_64 with Hardy.

I dont' know where to start with where to look- anyone know of any log
files I can check on to see if something is crashing?

I can't comment on whether or not this problem occurs using packaged
drivers because I always manually install them when I do a fresh install
of any release.
