Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't exist yet. You must mean Ubuntu 8.04?
Anyway, this is currently somewhat intentional (files from a Fedora
installation in /boot could easily interfere with a new Ubuntu
installation), although I agree that the results are suboptimal. Evan,
maybe we can be a bit finer-grained about /boot?
