I have the same problem in Ubuntu 8.04, OpenOffice.org 2.4, "openoffice
.org-code 1:2.4.0-3ubuntu6, Tue Apr 22".
I think the following is also related to this problem:
1. Insert -> Fields -> Other (Ctrl+F2)
2. Select the "Database" tab
3. Select the "Mail merge fields" type.
4. Add database file by clicking "Browse..".
5. Choose any OpenOffice spreadsheet/calc file ("ods" file) with a few columns
and a heading row.
None of the spreadsheet columns are visible in the newly added "Database
selection" entry. It is also not possible to remove the database
selection entry, but I think this is a separate issue.
The "Insert" button is grayed out, but after a few application switches
the button sometimes becomes active again (but has no functional
effect).
