I have the same problem as Shoko: All KDE + firefox apps I have tried so far, work with Japanese input via skim, but none of the OOo applications. The skim icon is present in the task bar but only with ordinary keyboard input mode. I cannot even open the menu of skim through clicking... It strange because it immediately works again as soon as a different application gets the focus.
My setup is Kubuntu 8.04 (kde-core only), AMD 64 on Intel core duo 2.
