I am running Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit. Because java does not work with Firefox
3 64 bit, I decided on installing the 32 bit version of Firefox, so I
could have java and flash. However, when installing ia32-sun-java6-bin,
a segfault results.

Please note that I have been getting a series of segfaults (wine,
swiftweasal, skype, npviewer, nautilus,gtk-gnash) since upgrading to
Hardy from Feisty.
