It's currently mentioned in /usr/share/doc/virtualbox-ose-guest- utils/README.Debian (where most users won't look).
Doing this automatically, might cause problems for some users - there have been bug reports where it failed somehow (graphic driver issues IIRC). This is a valid wishlist item though, so I'm marking it as such.
