Public bug reported:
Last night I did an upgrade of various newly available packages, after
rebooting my machine today after logging in at the gdm screen compiz
only displayed a white screen and a cursor!
I couldn't do anything, hitting ctrl-alt-f1 and running "metacity
--replace" although that was likely due me not providing the display. I
asked grub to switch from the broken 2.6.24-17 kernel to the previous
2.6.24-16 kernel which allowed compiz to boot successfully. This is how
I then managed to turn it off in the appearances menu. (Note here that
upgrading xorg-driver should specifically disable compiz, with a
notification on reboot "would you like to re-enable").
The last upgrade before that was the 22 May afterwhich everything was fine.
Attached is my xorg.0.log after failing to boot.
I hadn't touched my xorg.conf so this shouldn't likely be the problem,
although if it's needed will post it later.
I regard the aspect of this bug of not switching off compiz after boot CRITICAL
as newbies in my position will be met with a useless machine.
The fact that compiz is now not working I regard as HIGH, as something which
was working is now broken.
I can't be sure but I also suspect this has brought suspend problems
with my ati card back.
Thank you
This is a complete list of what I installed from the synaptic history:
